Abstract:
This study examined how the brain dynamically updates event representations by integrating new information over multiple minutes while segregating irrelevant input. A professional writer custom-designed a narrative with two independent storylines, interleaving across minute-long segments (ABAB). In the last (C) part, characters from the two storylines meet and their shared history is revealed. Part C is designed to induce the spontaneous recall of past events, upon the recurrence of narrative motifs from A/B, and to shed new light on them. Our fMRI results showed storyline-specific neural patterns, which were reinstated (i.e. became more active) during storyline transitions. This effect increased along the processing timescale hierarchy, peaking in the default mode network. Similarly, the neural reinstatement of motifs was found during part C. Furthermore, participants showing stronger motif reinstatement performed better in integrating A/B and C events, demonstrating the role of memory reactivation in information integration over intervening irrelevant events.

52. Accessing Real-Life Episodic Information from Minutes versus Hours Earlier Modulates Hippocampal and High-Order Cortical Dynamics

Abstract:
It is well known that formation of new episodic memories depends on hippocampus, but in real-life settings (e.g., conversation), hippocampal amnesics can utilize information from several minutes earlier. What neural systems outside hippocampus might support this minutes-long retention? In this study, subjects viewed an audiovisual movie continuously for 25 min; another group viewed the movie in 2 parts separated by a 1-day delay. Understanding Part 2 depended on retrieving information from Part 1, and thus hippocampus was required in the day-delay condition. But is hippocampus equally recruited to access the same information from minutes earlier? We show that accessing memories from a few minutes prior elicited less interaction between hippocampus and default mode network (DMN) cortical regions than accessing day-old memories of identical events, suggesting that recent information was available with less reliance on hippocampal retrieval. Moreover, the 2 groups evinced reliable but distinct DMN activity timecourses, reflecting differences in information carried in these regions when Part 1 was recent versus distant. The timecourses converged after 4 min, suggesting a time frame over which the continuous-viewing group may have relied less on hippocampal retrieval. We propose that cortical default mode regions can intrinsically retain real-life episodic information for several minutes.

53. Sherlock Movie Watching Dataset

Abstract:
Our daily lives revolve around sharing experiences and memories with others. When different people recount the same events, how similar are their underlying neural representations? In this study, participants viewed a fifty-minute audio-visual movie, then verbally described the events while undergoing functional MRI. These descriptions were completely unguided and highly detailed, lasting for up to forty minutes. As each person spoke, event-specific spatial patterns were reinstated (movie-vs.-recall correlation) in default network, medial temporal, and high-level visual areas; moreover, individual event patterns were highly discriminable and similar between people during recollection (recall-vs.-recall similarity), suggesting the existence of spatially organized memory representations. In posterior medial cortex, medial prefrontal cortex, and angular gyrus, activity patterns during recall were more similar between people than to patterns elicited by the movie, indicating systematic reshaping of percept into memory across individuals. These results reveal striking similarity in how neural activity underlying real-life memories is organized and transformed in the brains of different people as they speak spontaneously about past events.

54. Chinese overseas development financing of electric power generation: A comparative analysis

Abstract:
Global power generation must rapidly decarbonize by mid-century to meet the goal of stabilizing global warming below 2 degree Celsius. To meet this objective, multilateral development banks (MDBs) have gradually reduced fossil fuel and increased renewable energy financing. Meanwhile, globally active national development finance institutions (DFIs) from Japan and South Korea have continued to finance overseas coal plants. Less is known about the increasingly active Chinese DFIs. Here we construct a new dataset of China’s policy banks’ overseas power generation financing and compare their technology choices and impact on generation capacity with MDBs and Japanese and South Korean DFIs. We find Chinese DFI power financing since 2000 has dramatically increased, surpassing other East Asian national DFIs and the major MDBs’ collective public sector power financing in 2013. As most Chinese DFI financing is currently in coal, decarbonization of their power investments will be critical in reducing future carbon emissions from recipient countries.

55. Data for: "Financing Carbon Lock-in in Developing Countries: Bilateral Financing for Power Generation Technologies from China, Japan, and the United States"

Abstract:
Power sector decarbonization requires a fundamental redirection of global finance from fossil fuel infrastructure towards low carbon technologies. Bilateral finance plays an important role in the global energy transition to non-fossil energy, but an understanding of its impact is limited. Here, for the first time, we compare the influence of overseas finance from the three largest economies – United States, China, and Japan – on power generation development beyond their borders and evaluate the associated long-term CO2 emissions. We construct a new dataset of Japanese and U.S. overseas power generation finance between 2000-2018 by analyzing their national development finance institutions’ press releases and annual reports and tracking their foreign direct investment at the power plant level. Synthesizing this new data with previously developed datasets for China, we find that the three countries’ overseas financing concentrated in fossil fuel power technologies over the studied period. Financing commitments from China, Japan, and the United States facilitated 101 GW, 95 GW, and 47 GW overseas power capacity additions, respectively. The majority of facilitated capacity additions are fossil fuel plants (64% for China, 87% for Japan, and 66% for the United States). Each of the countries’ contributions to non-hydro renewable generation was less than 15% of their facilitated capacity additions. Together, we estimate that overseas fossil fuel power financing through 2018 from these three countries will lock in 24 Gt CO2 emissions by 2060. If climate targets are to be met, replacing bilateral fossil fuel financing with financing of renewable technologies is crucial.

This item contains two files. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network is built using the MATLAB Deep Network Designer (.m file). It imports a quantum cascade laser (QCL) dataset and splits it into 70% training, 15% validation, and 15% testing subsets. The network consists of an input layer, three hidden layers (each having a normalization and activation layer), and a regression output layer. All of the layers are fully connected, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is used to evaluate the accuracy of the network. An algorithm is trained on the [-2, +3] QCL dataset using 50 neurons, ReLU activation function, solver Adam, 0.001 learning rate, over 150 epochs, and is saved to be used in the prediction of figure of merit values for QCL designs (.mat file).

Abstract:
A dataset of 2400 quantum cascade structures at 15 electric field iterations, for a total of 36000 unique designs. The structures are generated by randomly altering a starting 10-layer design of alternating Al0.48In0.52As barrier material and In0.53Ga0.47As well material, with layer thickness sequence of 9/57/11/54/12/45/25/34/14/33 Angstroms (starting with well material). The random tolerance range is from -5 to +20 Angstroms in 5 Angstrom increments. The laser transition Figure of Merit, among other quantities of interest, is identified for each design using a method found in: A. C. Hernandez, M. Lyu and C. F. 70. Quantum cascade laser transition code

Abstract:
A code to identify the laser transition for a quantum cascade laser design based on the figure of merit. Variables such as the number of layers, and layer thicknesses, as well the applied electric field, materials composition, number of period repetitions, and layer tolerance ranges to generate random designs are specified. A folder containing a .csv file with all electronic state-pair transitions collected, a .png file of the bandstructure and the laser transition chosen (in red), for all electric field iterations, and a summary .csv file of all these laser transitions for a structure at each electric field is generated by the code. To use, first install ErwinJr2 on your computer. Then locate the "ErwinJr2" folder and copy these 6 files into that directory, overwriting the previous five files (Material.py, QCLayers.py, QCPlotter.py, QuantumTab.py, rFittings.py). Lastly, run the "acej-qcl-layer_10-lwrandom-v23.py" script using Python. The "summary-fomstar-3lu-eVmiddle-19.csv" file is generated after running the laser transition code, with all of the data collected for one structure at many electric fields. Running the script various times will generate random structures with the same electric field range. Joining these "summary" .csv files makes a QCL dataset.

76. The Dielectric Function of "Astrodust", and Absorption and Scattering Cross Sections for Spheroids

Abstract:
The dielectric function for "Astrodust" grain material is provided for different assumed values of the dust grain shape (spheroid axis ratio) and porosity (vacuum fraction), and fraction of the interstellar iron present as metallic inclusions. For each case, the dielectric function is obtained by requiring that the grains reproduce the observed infrared opacity, and match to a physically reasonable dielectric function at 1 micron, and extending to X-ray energies. The derived dielectric functions satisfy the Kramers-Kronig relations. Dielectric functions are provided from 1 Angstrom to 5 cm (12.4 keV to 2.59e-5 eV). For each dielectric function, we also calculate absorption and scattering corss sections for spheroidal grains, for three orientations of the grain relative to incident linearly-polarized light, for wavelengths from the Lyman limit (0.0912 micron) to the microwave (4 cm), and grain "effective radii" a_eff from 3.162A to 5.012 micron.

These data include 39 structured interview transcripts. Each case is someone who worked at the time for Uber, UberEats, Lyft, and/or Amazon Flex (Amazon’s contractor delivery service). These data were collected between July and September 2019. All but one of the interviews occurred over the phone. My questions are focused on the structure of their gig work jobs and the technology they used at work or expected to use at work in the future. I included a description of the data, the recruitment methods, and the discussion guide in this ReadMe file.

85. Large-Eddy Simulation Results for Half Ice / Half Water Surfaces

Abstract:
Large-eddy simulations were employed over half-ice and half-water surfaces, with varying surface temperatures, wind speeds, directions, as to test if the atmospheric interaction with the heterogeneous surface can be predicted via a heterogeneity Richardson number. This dataset was used to determine that surface heat fluxes over ice, water, and the aggregate surface seem to be captured reasonably well by the wind direction and the heterogeneity Richardson number, but the mean wind and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) profiles were not, suggesting that not only the difference in stability between the two surface, but also the individual stabilities over each surface influence the dynamics.

87. Large-Eddy Simulation and Statistical Metric Results for Patterned Sea Ice Surfaces

Abstract:
Large-eddy simulations were employed over five different sea ice patterns, with a constant ice fraction, to test if the overlying atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) dynamics and thermodynamics differs. The results of these simulations were used to determine that there were differences in vertical heat flux, momentum flux, and horizontal wind speed, and that more surface information is needed to predict the ABL over the sea ice surface. To see what other surface information is needed, twenty-two landscape metrics were calculated over forty-four different maps at differing resolutions, using the FRAGSTATs program. The results of that analysis are available in a .csv file in this dataset.

This dataset is created for the paper titled 'Co-benefits of Transport Demand Reductions from Compact Urban Development in Chinese Cities' and published on Nature Sustainability. We construct 6 scenarios of compact urban development, alternative energy vehicle deployment, and power decarbonization to explore the co-benefits of transport demand reductions via compact urban development for carbon emissions, energy use, air quality, and human health in China in 2050. This dataset provides the following gridded information for the scenarios: (1) monthly mean surface PM2.5 concentrations from the WRF-Chem model; (2) annual PM2.5-related premature deaths calculated by the GEMM model; (3) 2015 population in China; (4) mask for provinces in China; (5) longitude and latitude of each grid center.

Abstract:
This dataset contains all data related to the publication "Signatures of a liquid-liquid transition in an ab initio deep neural network model for water", by Gartner et al., 2020. In this work, we used neural networks to generate a computational model for water using high-accuracy quantum chemistry calculations. Then, we used advanced molecular simulations to demonstrate evidence that suggests this model exhibits a liquid-liquid transition, a phenomenon that can explain many of water's anomalous properties. This dataset contains links to all software used, all data generated as part of this work, as well as scripts to generate and analyze all data and generate the plots reported in the publication.

Abstract:
Carbonate mud represents one of the most important geochemical archives for reconstructing ancient climatic, environmental, and evolutionary change from the rock record. Mud also represents a major sink in the global carbon cycle. Yet, there remains no consensus about how and where carbonate mud is formed. In this contribution, we present new geochemical data that bear on this problem, including stable isotope and minor and trace element data from carbonate sources in the modern Bahamas such as ooids, corals, foraminifera, and green algae.
